Navigating Challenging Times

II was fortunate enough to present on this topic alongside an occupational therapy colleague from Texas. The challenging times? The uncertainty we face as school-based practitioners due to the recent announcements from the Department of Education. However, don't lose hope! Now might be the perfect opportunity to advocate for our workload and the collaborative model that we know benefits our students the most. States and local education agencies will be closely monitored to ensure positive student outcomes. Begin a conversation with your school's or district's administrative team. Follow these steps to initiate the process:
Determine what needs to be changed—is it your approach as a clinician, the school's or district's acceptance of a collaborative, participation-focused model, or the lack of engagement with your team? Determine your "what" first.
Next, gather your team—the individuals who will support and advocate with you. Build relationships that enhance your work and student engagement. Ensure they understand your role, and you understand their viewpoints. Do they trust you? Are they uncomfortable with your requests? Have they participated in discussions as you formulate strategies and interventions for your students? Grasp the culture.
Seek out administrators who need to be engaged with the discussion. Prepare a handout or presentation. Leverage the research on practice; leverage teacher and team feedback. Anything is possible with preparation.
As we approach 2026, I am eager to support your efforts. I aim to assist with your advocacy preparation. If your focus is on your practice, particularly transitioning towards school-based methods that emphasize the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), embedded interventions, and fostering students' sense of belonging in their classrooms and schools, please utilize the tools available on the website.
Happy Holidays!
Sue
